What to Pay Attention to After Limb Lengthening Surgery?
The limb lengthening method, also called the combination method and briefly referred to as LON, is a method of lengthening with a nail. This method is similar to the external fixator method and provides the added benefit of an internal nail for strength. Patients can ambulate with the help of a walker during this period, while the recovery time is much shorter than the HolyFix or Ilizarov methods. Additionally, since the external fixator device is used to distract the bones, it carries a risk of infection. Even after a successful surgery, the convalescence period after surgery is very important.
Post-Operative Convalescence Period in Limb Lengthening Surgery
The post-operative period is divided into three separate phases. These are;
- Post-operative Hospitalization
- Distraction
- Bone Consolidation.
Care and convalescence are very important in all these phases. The convalescence period after this surgery typically lasts 5 to 7 days after surgery, after which the patient is discharged from the hospital. Depending on the surgical method, each surgical method has its own challenges and care requirements. With methods like Ilizarov, HolyFix, and LON, the risk of infection continues until the external fixators are removed. During this period, the pin sites or the areas where the pins of the external fixators are attached to the bone require regular cleaning and care, as skin openings can form in these areas. Swelling, redness, or discharge may occur at the pin site skin openings. If such a symptom is noticed, you should consult your doctor immediately, and your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic course for you.
