Violence is Oppression
What is Violence?
We tend to see violence only as physical assault. However, any situation where we make someone feel "humiliated" involves violence. In other words, whenever we humiliate someone, regardless of the reason, we are actually perpetrating violence against them.
Which behaviors fall under the scope of violence?
We often resort to violence to punish others, cloaking it as being "for their own good." Locking a naughty child in their room is not punishment; it is violence. Making students who haven't done their homework stand on one foot in front of the class is not punishment; it is violence. Ignoring our spouse and acting as if they don't exist because they forgot our anniversary is not punishment; it is violence. Slamming the door in the face of a neighbor we encounter in the apartment building after they forgot to invite us to their celebration is not punishment; it is violence. Telling a young person on the bus who didn't offer their seat to an elderly person, "What a disrespectful youth you are, sitting while the elderly aunt is standing," is violence. Telling a friend, in front of everyone, a weak point or mistake of theirs because you were offended by something they said recently is violence...
It is understandable that someone who has become accustomed to humiliation in their childhood may not perceive these and similar behaviors as violence.
